A beautifully painted fence will enhance your home
Fence decorating is one of the cheapest ways to create a big impact on your outside space

First and foremost, a garden fence is not just an obstacle course for your cat!

Choosing a colour for decorating your fence is entirely your decision depending on the look you are striving for.

Neither is it simply a way to stop your neighbour’s dog from snooping around your garden, trampling your flowers, digging holes and leaving an unwelcome present on your lawn!  Obviously outdoor fencing is needed to secure your border and create a perimeter around your home, but there are so many more fence ideas that will liven up your outdoor space and reflect your tastes.  Painted in beautiful colours a decorative fence not only frames your garden, but does it in style, making you the envy of your neighbours!

Fencing ideas are a simple but cracking way to get creative in the garden, so if you are replacing or maintaining a garden fenceFence decorating is one of the cheapest ways to create a big impact on your outside space, it is also one of the easiest ways to transform your garden.

If you are not adverse to a little DIY, a perfectly painted fence can alter the look of your garden in one fell swoop.  Used inside your garden, fencing can section off and create secluded spots for dining and relaxing or can be useful for hiding your garden compost or a rainwater tank behind.  Solid fencing gives privacy whereas a slatted fence will let light filter through.

A surrounding fence will essentially keep you, your family and pets safe and secure in your garden and keep any unwanted visitors out.

You may be eager to decorate your fence with hanging baskets or a garden clock, and mirrors are a great way to make a small space seem larger.Choosing a colour for decorating your fence is entirely your decision depending on the look you are striving for.  Earth tones such as green will provide camouflage; neutral tones blend in to the garden naturally; shades of grey are very versatile and extremely on trend at the moment.  Black is another popular choice being bold and modern and a great backdrop to show off plants and colourful flowers.

Country style whites and pretty pastels suit a picket fence.  A brightly coloured option will reflect your own style and you may even choose a two tone effect (darker colour on the bottom) or use a mix of colours. and drink(s!).

simply keep your garden fence unadorned and wow with colour You may be eager to decorate your fence with hanging baskets or a garden clock, and mirrors are a great way to make a small space seem larger.  Small garden shelves on fencing are always handy for plant pots or for storing items in a barbecue area.

It's really bang on at the moment to extend your whole home into your garden, even somewhere to sleep like in this shot! A fence really helps the backdrop to al of this and your colour choices can help set the mood you are lookng for.

With a trellis attached you can grow a lovely climbing plant, or simply keep your garden fence unadorned and wow with colour from raised flower beds running along side or with potted plants and garden furniture.

You will be over the moon with a garden room!
Garden houses are so adaptable, from hi-tech office to plant potting area, she shed to man cave, tearoom to outdoor bar

Tucked away in a small corner of the garden or standing magnificently as a powerful focal point, you can create a versatile outside room.

Working in a garden office and being away from the house can certainly increase productivity

Garden houses are so adaptable, from hi-tech office to plant potting area, she shed to man cave, tearoom to outdoor bar.  Your preferred choice of garden room will give you plenty of scope to create a unique zone with undisturbed views of your garden, and attached to the house will seem like an extension of your home.  Perfectly small or surprisingly spacious, a garden building can fulfil your needs and encourage you to spend more time in your natural environment.  And with the weather getting warmer, who wants to be stuck inside the house anyway?!

Crafting Fun with Wooden Rabbits

We’re normally all about the big garden projects, but sometimes we like to take it back a bit and think of ideas that are family friendly especially when you are looking for things to do and also things to keep any little ones entertained!

Crafting with wood stain

We chose two bright and bold contrasting colours for the main bodies of the rabbits; Royal Giddy Green and Royal Flamingo Pink. For the bases we used the same colour to tie them together; Royal Metallics Gold.

Make sure there are no rough edges or excess glue on the rabbits. If there is, use a fine grade sandpaper (P120 grade) to smooth them off.

Use a good quality masking tape to mask off the area at the base of the rabbits. Measure and mark your desired depth all the way around using a pencil and ruler. Place the masking tape above the marked lines making sure it adheres well to the wood to prevent any paint leaking through. Try and make sure this is as straight as possible, because your eye is drawn to the line where the colour changes. Paint the chosen base colour using a small brush, keeping the strokes in the direction of the woodgrain. Once completely dry, paint another coat. Depending on your chosen colour you may need two or three coats to give a solid colour. We left the paint to dry over night to ensure it was fully dry before removing the masking tape. Hopefully you should be left with a clean line!

Flamingo Royal Exterior Shop Now Giddy Green Royal Exterior Shop Now Gold Metallic Royal Exterior Shop Now

How to get started crafting with our wood atainTo paint the main body of the rabbits, carefully stick masking tape along the edge of the base colour where it joins the bare wood. Try to make sure it on the line exactly, so the colours join without any gaps. Again, make sure it adheres well to prevent any paint leaking through. If you are painting the nose a different colour, mask off this area as well. Paint the main body colour using a small brush, keeping the brush strokes in the same direction as the woodgrain. Once completely dry, paint another coat. Depending on your chosen colour you may need two or three coats to give a solid colour. As before we left the paint to dry over night to ensure it was fully dry before carefully removing the masking tape. If there are any areas that don’t match exactly, you can over paint these. If you are painting the nose a different colour fill this in as well.

We love the result of crafting with our wood stainsAs the eyes were so small, we decided to use a marker pen to put these on, rather than paint and brush. Mark where you want the eyes to go with a pencil before using the marker to make sure they are in the correct place.

Summer homes can be anything you want them to be, they could not be more versatile if they tried!

Warm shades such as grey, green or blue blend into the garden beautifully and compliment the natural setting

Nestled snuggly at the end of your garden, they offer an ideal place to escape to, an extra living space for relaxing in, a glorious crafting room, a bedroom to accommodate guests, a serious office or workshop and not forgetting an outside bar or cosy birdwatching area.  And it doesn’t end there!  As well as the vast choice of internal options, the outside can hold it’s own with exterior colours to suit your garden and personality.  These outdoor rooms have it all going on!

You like pagoda and I like pergola
Pergolas are very versatile
Pretty pergolas covered in vines and surrounded by elegant potted plants and flowers

Did you think a pergola was just a few lengths of wood covered in vines just like your Grandad had in his back yard?  Or did you know the full extent and benefits of having a stunning structure extending from your home into your garden?

Pergolas are extremely adaptable in size and budget and this results in many options and possibilities.  They are a wonderful way to increase your time spent outside.  So if you enjoy outdoor dining, a get together with friends and family in the not too distant future, or just want a cosy little shielded spot to sit and read a book (away from nosy neighbours!), then a stylish pergola has so much to offer.  And can you think of a better way to enjoy the outdoors without actually having to leave your home?  Sounds perfect!

A covered pergola will provide a safe havenPergolas would definitely encourage you outside to experience more days in the garden, whether that be relaxing, socialising with friends, pottering around or simply stepping outside the house to breathe in the fresh air now and again.  So whenever you get the chance you could choose to reap the benefits of being outdoors rather than spending your valuable time indoors.  Night-times should not be forgotten either; fairy lights entwined around posts and beams create a calm ambience when twinkling therapeutically on a warm evening.

Painted wood panelling, goodbye ordinary walls!
Wood Panelling

Wall panels are no longer associated with being an old fashioned thing of the past, they are bang up to date and ooze character in any home.  Painted panelling is the new way to go rather than opting for wallpaper or plain plastered walls, and the fact that it hides bumpy uneven walls is just a bonus!

You can add interest to a modern home by painting the wall panels bright colours or update a period property with soft blues and greys.  Wood panelling transforms a featureless room delivering a warm and cosy look, so if you want your study to be more sophisticated or your bedroom to be less boring and more blooming marvellous, then wood panels are the way forward.

So whether it’s a bath panel or hallway, every room in your home would benefit from painted wood panelling, from the living room right up to the bedroom.  The next step would be to choose the panelling and decide on either one feature area or the whole room, and then how far up the wall to have it fitted, your options are limitless.

Wood Panelling

Having decided to bite the bullet and commit to wood panels on your walls, and after choosing your colour scheme, the final decision is what paint to use.

Most paints are not hard enough to take the knocks and scrapes of busy household traffic and  don’t even get me started on what the kids/dogs get up to!

HOW TO

There are lots and lots of great guides on YouTube for getting your wood panelling up, but here's a quick guide from us depending on the type of wood you are using:

Already painted with Satin Wood or Gloss?

Prep: Sand as well as possible, no primer needed

New MDF?

2 coats no primer

New Wood?

Stain Blocking Primer for light colours, nothing for darker shades as product is self-priming

Interior Inspiration, Revamp Old Furniture

Upcycling furniture is an easy DIY project to try in the long Winter months ahead. Sue had this small nest of dark brown tables at home, but they looked outdated in her modern home.

Stain Blocking Primer

A fresh clean look was sought, which would also coordinate with current décor in the living room, so blue / grey tones were chosen, and then the prepping commenced!

The tables had originally been heavily varnished, so needed sanding back to bare wood before any new treatment could be applied. As they were a dark hardwood, Stain Blocking Primer was painted on first and allowed to fully dry. This should stop any tannins from the wood bleeding through final paint surface.

Royal Exterior Table MakeoverThe complimentary colours of Silver Grey, Hadspen Blue and Anthracite Grey were chosen, one for each of the tables. Three coats were applied, leaving each enough time to dry in between the next. This gave a wonderful solid colour finish, that would also act as a hard-wearing surface. Less that a litre of each colour was used, so this would be a great way to use up any left-over paint from your summer projects.

This simple upcycling project has given a new lease of life to these tables and they look fab in their stylish new home.

Tis the season!

Everyone seems to be hanging lights and Christmas decorations so much earlier this year as we all do our best to lift and brighten ourselves and our homes.

One garden that always shines brightly is Yvonne at six@21, who has created a magical ‘she shed’ complete with lights, a tree, Christmassy decorations, steaming mugs of tea and plenty of rugs to protect from the chill. A proper winter haven.

The shed was painted in Royal Exterior Stone Grey and provides the perfect back drop to the season.

You could also try using;

Nothing says Christmas more than a wreath!!!

A Christmas wreath is now commonplace on most doors across the country.  Whether you make It yourself (done that….blimey that is hard work), drag out the same one year after year or buy new, it is sure to add some interest to the entrance to your home.

A happy accident meant that we stumbled across the details for wildroseflorist.co.uk after seeing one of her wreaths hanging on a jeweller’s door!  We had a quick chat on the phone about colour with a request for greens, blues and purples but not too much red and orange.

So, imagine our surprise and delight when Rachael turned up with THE most beautiful wreath. The stunning colours were a perfect match for the Royal Exterior Slate Grey Front door.

The blues and purples were a perfect compliment to the slate grey, so much so that it looked like we had been very clever and intentionally done it.

The neighbours have all admired it so much that we felt we had to photograph our statement ‘door art’ and share it.

Other door colours that would work perfectly would be;

Slate Grey

Dove Grey

Ice Blue

Mendip Mist

Please share your front doors and wreaths- we love having a look at your ideas.

Happy Christmas everyone.

Royal Interior Wood Stain - Shop Now

Stairs are no longer just a way to get upstairs and go to bed. Now they are a design statement in their own right. Every part of the humble staircase has had a makeover, from the steps to the spindles to the bannisters.

Previously the choice was white or wood. Well not any more. They have had a serious colour update. Greys, blacks and even pinks adorn them. Who would have thought staircases would receive so much love?!

Having decided to attempt some DIY, and after choosing your colour scheme, the next decision is what paint to use.

Our paint suggestion would be Royal Interior superior wood finish. This long lasting, hard wearing and highly waterproof wood paint will keep looking good and protected, whatever you do on your stairs!

Those grubby fingerprints on your white bannister could be a thing of the past with a green or navy redo.  So if your stairs need a modern update, or your Victorian staircase has a bannister and railings that are looking sorry for themselves, then look no further.

Moroccan Inspired Garden

Log Cabin Living

With the change in the season comes the change in temperatures and cooler nights but we are not ready to hide inside ……yet!

That’s why we were excited by the Love Your Garden Episode 9 2017 when Alan Titchmarsh and his team created a Moroccan inspired garden in Nottingham. The garden was a surprise for an inspirational boxing coach Marcellus Baz.

Our highlights were; the use of terracotta on the paths (there is something warming about terracotta), the seating area covered in a random selection of coloured tiles, a water feature and centre stage the fire pit. A great space to sit, chat and sip mint tea and maybe toast the odd marshmallow or two! In fact we were so inspired we bought our own!!

The fences were painted with a selection of our paints from Royal Exterior and Wood Stain and Protect. From Royal Exterior Iris Blue, Black, Saffron, Eggshell Blue and Somerset Blue were used and from Wood Stain and Protect Ethnic Red, Biscuit and Bristol Blue.

The striking colours definitely brightened up an ordinary garden.

Black is Definitely the New Black

Black is Defiantly the New Black

Quick and Easy Easter Homemade Gift

Quick Easter homemade gift in Wood PaintWe were looking for something different to paint for Easter, not just the usual egg shapes, and found an adorable fairy door with bunny ears at The Wooden Shape Company www.thewoodenshapecompany.com. It’s made out of smooth plywood and came with a variety of little accessories.

We chose pastel ice cream shades from our Royal range as the base and added a little bling with Gold from the Metallics range. The fairy door came in sections (outer edge, window frame etc), which made it much easier to paint. We did use a small artist brush to keep it neat and make sure we could do all the fine details. Little preparation was needed as the door was already smooth (no sanding needed!), just put old newspaper or similar underneath to catch any drips or spills. To give an even finish we paint two coats, allowing the first to dry before applying the second. The colours we used were: main door Eggshell Blue, out edge Ice Blue, window frame French Lilac, inner ears and heart Lemon Yellow, bunny and door knocker Metallic Gold.

Once it was all dry we stuck the parts together using wood glue, but you could probably use any glue that would dry clear. Don’t put too much on or it will ooze out around the edges when pressed together. If you do put too much on, wipe away any excess with a cloth before it dries.

Easy Laundry Basket Upcycle

Laundry basket beforeLaundry Basket UpcycleRoyal Metallics Wood Stain - BronzeRoyal Exterior - Cashmere

When we started the laundry basket make-over we couldn’t quite decide what colour to paint it; whether to be bold and brave and paint it a strong colour, or choose a more neutral, go with anything shade. We were bold with the first choice of Royal Heritage Blue, but then decided we could do both!  To give a quick new look to our laundry basket, we went with Royal Cashmere, a luxurious neutral tone that would go with the Royal Metallics Bronze already used as a highlight colour.

We painted straight over the top of the Royal Heritage Blue with the Royal Cashmere and because of it’s great formulation, it only needed two coats to cover the Heritage Blue. As before, make sure you prepare well; put a dust sheet or old newspaper down, tape any edges if you’re not very confident with getting a straight line and wait for the first coat to dry before applying the next.

Easy Garden Furniture Revamp

A set of untreated hardwood sun loungers was suffering from weathering, UV fade and algae growth. This once attractive and expensive set of furniture had become an eyesore and was in desperate need of some love and attention.

The timber was stripped back using an industrial powered pressure washer then the remaining algae killed and re- moved by painting on a solution of water and bleach. Once dry the timber was ready for a protective wood stain to be applied.

Royal Exterior in Hazelnut was applied to leave a superbly rich colour with a natural looking finish that allows grain to shine. Some elbow grease and two coats of Royal Exterior was all that was needed to transform this set of sun loungers in to beautiful pieces of furniture that set the scene for partying, picnicing, relaxation and fun.

The hard-wearing, attractive water-repellent coating is set to protect the loungers for many years of enjoyment.

Upcycle your laundry basket it's super easy

Laundry basket beforeLaundry Basket UpcycleRoyal Metallics Wood Stain - BronzeRoyal Exterior - Heritage BlueChristmas is a fading memory. It’s dark, wet and cold outside and most people are still in winter hibernation, longing for Spring to arrive. Whilst you’re waiting for the warmth and sunshine of the brighter days ahead, why not put your time to good use and re-vamp something from around your house. We found a tired and slightly battered wicker laundry basket, which had definitely seen better days, but rather than consigning it landfill, we decided to give it a make-over.

Laundry basket with masking tapeWe started by removing the fabric liner and giving it a good brush to remove any dust and loose fibers. To make sure the paint takes to the surface you are painting, it may be necessary to key the surface with some sandpaper. Most of our laundry basket was OK, but the bamboo edging was very smooth and shiny, so we gave it a quick sand with some 80 grit paper. Once you have finished any sanding, brush it down again and wipe it with a damp cloth to remove any fine particles. Leave to dry before starting to paint. To add some extra interest to our basket, we used two colours, Royal Heritage Blue and Royal Metallics Bronze. If you are going to paint different colours, it’s best to separate off the areas using masking tape. This should make it easier to paint and also help prevent bleeding of the colours. We wanted to paint a stripe around the middle, so measured the same distance from the top and bottom of the basket (20cm in this case)

Prep for laundry basket upcycle

and marked it with a marker pen. As we were painting the main colour, Heritage Blue, first we put the masking tape along the edge where the blue will finish (covering the area where the Bronze will be). Do this all the way around the item and smooth it down so the paint doesn’t leak underneath. As the basket is wicker, we weren’t going to get a perfect line, but it can be amended by eye as you go along. Make sure you put down some old newspaper or a dust sheet under the item you are painting to prevent any unwanted paint transfer and splashes.

Heritage Blue and BronzeOnce all the preparation has been done, you can start painting. The brush we used had synthetic bristles, as this works best with our water based paints. Don’t choose one that is too big, as you’ll find it harder to cut in along any edges. Work your way around the item, being careful not to smudge any wet paint as you go. The first coat will act as a base layer and depending on the item’s original coating, it may not cover completely in one go. Leave this first coat to dry, and then apply another. Two coats are usually sufficient, but if necessary apply a third. Once all the coats are dry, you can carefully remove the masking tape. If you feel confident enough, it may not be necessary to apply another line of masking tape for the second colour. The Heritage Blue gave a good, clean edge, so we didn’t apply any more masking tape to the basket. Apply the second colour in the same way as the first, being careful where the colours join. As the bronze was a similar colour to the natural wicker, we found that one coat was sufficient to cover it.

Make sure your item is completely dry before moving it to it’s final position !

How to transform your old garden furniture! Teak table and chairs

Upcycling garden furniture using wood stains and paints - BeforeRoyal Exterior - WalnutMy teak garden furniture table and chairs set had never been treated with anything and after more than 10 years of exposure to rain, sun and general muck they were looking dirty, tired and old. Firstly we cleaned them using a power washer to strip off all of the dirt and algae then left to dry fully. ower washers are very effective at blasting off dirt and old coatings but they also create furring and splinters on the timber. When the timber is fully dry a light sand is required to remove splinters and create a good surface to paint on to. I couldn’t decide between colours so applied the two choices from sample tins to a strip underneath the chair s where it wouldn’t notice. This meant that if I had decided to go with the lighter Hazelnut shade the darker Walnut stain wouldn’t show through.

All 4 chairs, the table top and legs were given a light sand. It was a cold wet winter so all of it was brought inside a garage for treatment. Being teak (hardwood) I used Royal Exterior as it is designed for hardwood and is best suited for use on garden furniture. I chose the Walnut wood stain as felt it better suited the darker original hardwood and I loved the colour! After only 1 coat of Royal Exterior wood stain there is a gorgeous golden wood tone to the table top. You can just apply one coat of a coloured wood stain and use one to two coats of Royal Exterior Clear to protect the coloured coating and provide full water-repellency and protection against the elements. The chairs were turned upside down to ensure that the Royal treatment was applied to all parts of the timber sealing it against moisture penetration.

Upcycling garden furniture using wood stains and paints - teak

After 2 coats were applied you can still see the wood grain showing through. The Walnut colour looks rich and beautiful with a warm golden tone and my very old garden furniture is transformed in to a beautiful set that looks brand new again and will last for many more years! And now time to put it back in the garden to enjoy using it again and look forward to the warm summer months where the mug of tea and garden tools can be replaced by an evening meal and nice glass of wine!
