Decorating and protecting your garden is a time consuming job that you will want to get right first time. Most people may have the ability to see a colour swatch on screen and visualise what their fence would look like in that colour but to have the confidence to be creative and mix colours up is not so easy.
Even if you do have a good idea of what you wantit could be worthwhile trying a sample to see exactly how it will work in your garden. Other colours, shade and plants will all have an effect on the overall look. To know for sure how it will turn out you can order a colour tester pot to see what the shades will really look like.
There is a full range of Protek Wood Stain tester pots available from this website. We have made them as inexpensive as possible to encourage creativity and inspire confidence in your purchase. Simply select the tester pot for the product and colour you would like to try from the list and add it to the cart.
Each tester pot contains 100ml and will paint two coats over an area of approximately 50cm x 50cm (1’8” x 1’8”). So there is enough to splash it about on different parts of the garden. Don’t forget that these wood stains will also go on terracotta pots and masonry.

As part of Protek’s continued drive to manufacture more environmentally friendly products, Protek Decking Stain has been re-formulated. It is now comprised of a water based acrylic and Alkyd hybrid that incorporates a polyurethane dispersion based on linseed oil, a natural renewable resource.
Protek’s Decking Stain still produces fantastic results and can also be used to protect hardwood and softwood garden furniture and summerhouses.

Chelsea flower show this year was resplendent with pale grey and white landscaping that really set off lush green foliage and accompanied white flowers. Protek have for a while offered a range of grey wood stains and now we boldly add white to the range.
Protek Wood Stain & Protector White has been a little while in development. The nature of a woodstain is to allow something of the timber beneath to show through. This meant that the colour was always off white, to get a satisfactory white required too many coats.
Along with the rest of the range we want the absolute best results from a one or two coat finish. To achieve this we have had to load the wood stain heavily with white pigment. The pigment used is Titanium di Oxide which is naturally occurring and safe enough to be used in food.
With a woodstain you need a relatively thin product that will get into the surface of the timber to colour and protect it, it’s also very important to keep the wood grain showing through. White emulsion paint and gloss paint are full of thickeners that increase the colour concentration on the surface by making a very thick coating. Adding loads of gum, clay or thickeners would detract from the performance and the appearance of Protek Wood Stain & Protector.
If you are looking for a whitewash or a liming effect you can still paint a thin layer of white and then maybe finish it with the Clear Tough Coat. For those who are after a pure white finish having twice the amount of pigment does mean only painting half the number of coats.
So the Wood Stain & Protector White is priced differently to the other colours in the range but when you find you have to do half the number of coats it will be worth every penny.

Over the past couple of years Protek has taken on new challenges posed not only by the economy but by legislation and environmental concerns. This had lead to a new generation of timber treatment products including cost effective, environmentally friendly, easy to use bulk deliveries for agriculture.
Protek has been manufacturing timber treatments, colourants and preservatives in the UK for over twenty five years. Originally Eric Thornborough started the business manufacturing a water based alternative to creosote for fencing that was far more environmentally friendly and delivered as a concentrated solution. The range then naturally expanded to include treatments and water-proofers for planed timber primarily used on garden sheds. Under the Tecca brand Protek made high pressure impregnation timber preservatives for agricultural fencing; initially CCA salts and now arsenic and chrome free preservers. In addition to the industrial range of preservatives and treatments Protek also offers a comprehensive retail range of wood stains, treatments and paints for the consumer.
Recently Protek have adapted their technology to make a one coat application for repainting and general maintenance of poultry sheds and animal buildings. This long lasting coating contains preservatives that are animal friendly and waterproofs with a mix of acrylics and wax. Called Protek Premium Grade it is a ready to use solution available in a range of colours and delivered in 25 litre or 1000 litre containers. The solution can be sprayed on for ease of application and is quick drying. This is just part of a new generation of products. The European Biocides Product Directive, BPD, will have a big impact on the timber treatment world as it has already on the formulation of Protek’s coatings, as some preservers and biocides will no longer be cleared for use. Ben Thornborough explained that with close consultation with their biocide partners Protek have designed new coatings for the timber industry that will have a good regulatory future. Ben says “It will be interesting to see over the next few years which biocides that are largely used today in Wood Preservers will not make i t through the BPD andREACH”.
Responding to the demand for ecoproducts Protek can now supply their products with resins from sustainable sources reducing the amount of petrochemical derivatives used. Eric’s original ethos was to create the most effective environmentally friendly timber treatment in the market, and since his retirement this continues to be the next generation’s objective today.

The Protek wood stain range originated in the 1980's using only water-based technology for the treatment and preservation of wood. This was a time when most people still used creosote to treat their timber. Our mission at Protek was to change the manufacture of all fencing and shed products to our new water-based wood stains and treatments. We promoted the use of water-based formulas containing organic pigments with boron as the preservative in concentrates against oil and solvent based high VOC products as the way forward. They were (and still are) easier and nicer to use and have a far lower environmental impact.
