No, none of Protek’s wood stains contain animal products and so they are suitable for use by vegetarians and vegans. |
Are Protek wood stains waterproof coatings breathable? |
Yes, Protek use acrylics and waxes that leave a microporous coating that allows timber to breathe. |
Can I paint Protek wood stains over old wood stains? |
Yes you can paint over old treatments even if they were spirit based or creosote. The coating must be well weathered and the surface must be cleaned as much as possible. |
I would like to paint my deck with a light colour from the Wood Protector range but I’m worried it will wear off quickly. What do you recommend? |
A first coat of Wood Protector will soak into the timber, further coats will build up on top of that. If the decking area gets a lot of foot traffic we would recommend that you put a coat of Decking Stain Clear over the top. |
I have new and old fencing of different shades. What do you recommend will protect my fencing and match up all the colours? |
A dark wood stain like Shed & Fence Nut Brown will cover over almost all colours, I one coat doesn’t match up the colours then try a second coat. If you would like a lighter colour use Wood Protector as it has white pigments in it that will cover over darker colours. Both contain a fungicide that will help your fencing last. |
It has been some time since my shed was last treated. What product would best waterproof my shed? |
Wood Protector and Shed & Fence are both designed to waterproof timber. Both will adhere to smooth and rough sawn timber surfaces but will require two coats. The first coat will soak into the timber and successive coats will build up the protection and sheen. |
What kind of fungicide is used? Is it dangerous? |
Protek wood stains Wood Protector and Shed & Fence contain a borate fungicide. This is a natural borate mineral salt.
This natural form of boron is actually good for plants and harmless to people and animals. This borate is said to be only half as dangerous for humans and animals as table salt but effective against fungi and insects. |
We really like the colours of the Wood Protector range and would like to use them on our children’s play equipment. Are the wood stains safe for children? |
Yes. Once dry the coating is perfectly safe for children’s play equipment. We don’t suggest that you allow children to use the wood stain or paint with it but it does conform to BS EN-71 and is suitable for use on products carrying the CE mark.
Protek Wood Protector and other Protek wood stains have been tested and show that they do not contain any elements of antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury and selenium. |
Can Protek wood stains be used around ponds? |
It is fine to have timber around ponds treated with any of the Protek wood stain range but be sure to paint the items away from the pond itself. We do not advise Protek wood stains to come in contact with the pond water. |
Are Protek wood stains safe for animals? |
Yes they are but you are advised to make sure that all surfaces are dry and allow a minimum of 24 hours before allowing animals near any treated surfaces. |
Coverage depends on surface porosity but you can expect to get between 8m2 and 12m2 per litre. |
How many coats should I apply? |
On rough sawn timber one coat is usually enough, unless you are treating a building in which case a second coat will improve the waterproofing.
On smooth or planed surfaces it is generally better to apply two coats. |
What type of sprayer can I use? |
Protek is best suited to low pressure spraying or airless spraying. The type of pump up garden sprayers that are common in most gardens, knapsack sprayers, electric fence and shed sprayers are all ideal. As Protek’s wood stains create water proof coating it is important that you keep the nozzle clean. Rinse them with water if they are not going to be used for a while and after use to make sure a film doesn’t build up and block the sprayer or nozzle up. |
Can I spray Protek wood stains? |
Yes you can.
All Protek wood stains are suitable for spraying. They are all water based too so if you find they are too thick for your sprayer try adding up to 10% water. |
